Did Yesterday Feel Like the Day Before? ... And the Day Before That?

Did yesterday feel the same as the day before?  And the day before that?  Like the film, Groundhog Day?   If you've ever seen the movie “Groundhog Day,” you'll know what I'm talking about. This period of self isolation and quarantine has really been taking its toll on me.

Groundhog Day is Feb 2nd, when according to Pennsylvania tradition, the groundhog emerges from hibernation. If it sees its shadow, it returns to its burrow for 6 weeks, as a sunny day indicates a late spring while a cloudy day would mean an early spring.  The term Groundhog Day also describes a situation in which a series of unwelcome or tedious events appear to be recurring in exactly the same way every day. Bill Murray's character, Phil is a cynical TV weatherman who finds himself reliving the same day over and over again. He wakes up caught in a time warp where every day is the same. It's 6am on his digital clock radio and the song, "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher, is playing again - day after day!  Until it gradually changes......  He finds out that when he changes his attitude and actions even a little bit, his life changes for the better.

During this Covid-19 Quarantine period, I can relate to Phil. When I first wake up, I feel excited and happy -  like "Oh yay - a new day!" Then -  Clunk!  -  I realize we're still in quarantine. Once again we're supposed to self isolate and stay inside, and for me, it's now been 49 days. The film asks the viewer - If you were forced to repeat the same day over and over again how would you spend it? Phil eventually evolves and learns the key to life isn't what happens but how you react to it. He is given opportunity after opportunity to get the day right.  If you remember the movie, Phil's escape from Groundhog Day is triggered by his transformation into a good person and by the fact that he is finally worthy of his heartthrob's love.

Maybe that isn't so far from our life situations right now. Yes - this is a serious pandemic. However, while we self isolate, we can evolve and react differently to all of this. We're also given the opportunity to get the day right. Even with the constraints we are under.

Ask - How can I elevate the quality of today? Here are some ideas:

  • Meditate at least 5 out of the 7 days a week. Start each day with your Gratitude List.

  • Set a strong Intention for today and say with feeling - "Today is going to be an absolutely awesome day!"

  • Take steps that move you towards your heart's desire every day. What can you do today towards what matters most in your life?

  • When you think that repetitive, negative thought, smile and lovingly say - Change!

  • Feel a better feeling thought, a more loving thought. This produces changes in your future.

What can you do differently today during this Quarantine?  How about doing something Bold, Brave and New?

Every day keep moving - make another move towards what makes you happy.

Actions matter - even small ones! Be kinder to the retail workers in grocery stores. How about a safe, social distancing walk in a new, different neighborhood?

Visualize the outcome you desire after all of this.   Maybe you'd like to shed 5 lbs...  Become a better writer, speaker, acquire some new technical skills. Learn how to host virtual meetings and webinars. Aim high.  Whatever it is you want, feel like you already have it. The energy always changes when you open your heart.  Concentrate on what you can give. Give something of value.

Exercise, keep a healthy routine, reach out to someone who is lonely. Limit news and negativity.

So Phil's escape from Groundhog Day was triggered by his transformation into a good person. We can also use this time to transform into better people, grow spiritually, to open up our hearts, and become more loving.

In the movie's final episode -  the clock hits 6am, Sonny and Cher start singing. Phil wakes up feeling terrible.  But then something happens. The announcers say something different than before. A woman's arm reaches across the bed and shuts off the radio. He's in bed with his true love, meaning that the curse has been broken. He runs to the window and looks down at the street - unlike before it's totally empty and covered with snow. The two of them head outside and Phil talks about how beautiful the world is. He closes the movie by saying "Let's live here." Now that he has the power to leave Punxsutawney, he doesn't want to. They then head down the street hand in hand.

According to the latest news reports, there could be at least another month of our Quarantine "Groundhog Day" period of self isolation. This morning I woke up and looked at my digital clock. It was 6am. Groundhog Day again? No. I took a deep breath and decided to make today different and become a new me today. If I can upgrade each day in some way, while I am restrained under this quarantine - imagine what it could be like afterwards when I'm actually free again?  When this is over - and you look back at this time, what will you wish you had done?  How can you realize every possible gain during this day - take advantage of every opportunity? This is a story of continuing rebirth, a rare opportunity to live several lifetimes all in the same day. It's an opportunity to PAUSE... reflect, redo, to love and learn from experience. To unlock the magic and transform our lives.

Humans don't awaken when we're in our comfort zone - we awaken when we're take OUT of our comfort zone. Adversity forces us to go deeper and go inward, and it's not too late to start digging now. How do you break free from repetitive thoughts and behaviors that keep you in a rut - the hidden chains and handcuffs of a daily "Groundhog Day" life? You hold the key when you emerge from this lockdown.

You may find that you don't want to go back to "normal," to business as usual.

Use this as an opportunity to reset, go in and find what you really want from this day forward. We may have been physically separated, but we are all connected. When restraints are taken off us, compassion, generosity and unity will help us embrace what's the same in all of us.

We will never go back to January 2020. It's a different world now. Is there some good - here in this moment - that you presently cannot see? Is there a new you trying to emerge? This is a pause - a chance to start over.  Set an intention to transform during this quarantine period. When the Covid-19 disease is no longer a threat and you're free to go out into the world again - imagine - it's 6am, you are waking up, reborn as a new, unlimited, more loving, grateful, transformed version of you.

Ask yourself, "When I look back at this "pause", what will I wish I'd done during this time?  What will I wish I had done more of during this period?  What actions can I take today towards my heart's desires?"

Do something today that your future self will thank you for!
